NCRB farm suicide data is Hoax-VJASDated-19th July 2015
A new methodology to adopted National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) in order to show there is sharp drop farmer suicides by over 50% in the year 2014 is being termed as Hoax and when Rural India fared badly last year, with farm distress peaking and 12,360 farmers which is in fact 5% higher than in 2013, which recorded 11,772 cases, said Kishor Tiwari, president Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti, a farmers’ advocacy group who are monitoring and documenting farmers suicides since 1995 .
The data is fabricated to show fewer deaths as Distress on the ground is higher than what NCRB figures show.” ,when major states like Rajasthan, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha and Bihar have not furnished any farmer suicides data for 2014 ,NCRB's farm suicides is regional not national ,the declassification to downplay farm suicides figure NCRB has listed all landless tribal farmers and billions of leasehold tenancy farmers as agricultural workers moreover thousands of rural suicides cases has been classified in others category which has put question mark to NCRB credibility, NCRB data has been manipulated to give a rosy picture in the international arena when in reality is very gloom ,Tiwari added.
“NCRB have deliberately divided the suicides under different heads. The report says 4,004 agriculture-related suicides were recorded in Maharashtra during 2014 and then subtracts agricultural workers from the number and gives 2,568 as the total figure. But even with 2,568, Maharashtra tops the country, and for the first time, the government has admitted that the landless farmers are also dying,” said Tiwari
The total number of farmers’ suicides in Maharashtra should be 4,004, which is almost 1,000 more than the 2013 figure. It’s shameful if the government takes credit for 500-odd fewer suicides. The issue is getting complicated everyday in Maharashtra. Farmers are not getting proper prices for their produce, but input costs are rising. Maharashtra has recorded over 2,000 farmers’ suicide until June this year. Over 800 farmers have killed themselves in Vidarbha and over 600 farmers committed suicide in Marathwada,” Mr. Tiwari said
In 2013, more than 3,000 farmers in the state ended their lives, according to records, but people in the know claim the NCRB does not reflect ground realities. “” said Tiwari adding there were more than 4,000 suicides in the state. “, it is alarming.
