6 farmers commit suicide in past 4 days

Nagpur, Jul 5 : Six farmers committed suicide in the past four days in Vidharbha district of Maharashtra due to indebtedness and an errant monsoon that damaged their crops, Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samittee said.

According to a VJAS statement, three farmers from Yeotmal district and one each from Amrawati, Akola and Bhandara district chose death.

They have been identified as Mahadev Tukaram Shyamsundar of Rohi village, Madhukar Zituji Chaudhari of Kalamb and Jairam Todsam of Chikhaldoh village of Yeotmal district.

Punjabrao Bhimrao Mudre of Umarkhed village of Amravati, Subhash Kiran Kharode of Pouindala of Akola district and Rajendra Kore from Tadas village of Bhandara district also committed suicide due to heavu debt, VJAS source said.

Since January this year, 331 Vidarbha farmers have ended their lives due to the agrarian crisis, claimed Kishore Tiwari of VJS.

The Samittee has been documenting farmers suicides in the region since 2001.

Shravan Hardikar, Yavatmal district collector, said, ''I have sought details of the latest suicides from the officer concerned.

Whether all these suicides were a result of the agrarian crisis is yet to be ascertained.''
